Antonio Lopez is a Puerto Rican-American fashion illustrator who became one of the most influential fashion artists of the 1960s–80s, working for Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, The New York Times, and Interview. In his work, fashion is presented as a vibrant image of the era—featuring unusual poses, bold color combinations, ornamentation, and attention to detail—which is why his illustrations remain fresh, daring, and contemporary even today.
In this project, I was interested in rendering Antonio Lopez’s visual language and interpreting the specificities of his style through a generative model. My goal was to train the model on 1960s–1980s fashion illustrations to create a new series of images while retaining the recognizable aesthetic of the original works.
model training
For the training data, I compiled a folder of 48 illustrations by Antonio Lopez. All images were standardized to a 1:1 aspect ratio so that the model would process consistent source data compositions.
For each image, a text description was automatically generated using BLIP, and then characteristics specific to the chosen aesthetic were added: color palette, expressive line work, elongated figures, and fashion illustration techniques.
The foundation used was Stable Diffusion XL 1.0, adapted to the chosen visual aesthetic using a DreamBooth LoRA.

After training, the resulting LoRA was connected to the base model and used to generate a new series of fashion illustrations based on text prompts.

results analysis
Through this project, I was able to create a series of fashion illustrations based on the visual characteristics of Lopez’s style. During the learning process, the Stable Diffusion model adopted his distinctive techniques: bright, contrasting colors, expressive linear graphics, elongated figure proportions, dynamic poses, and unconventional compositional solutions. This resulted in a cohesive series of images sharing the overall aesthetic and atmosphere of 1960s–70s fashion illustration.
However, the outcome cannot be described as an exact reproduction of the original works. The neural network interprets the studied visual techniques in its own way. Occasionally, errors arise in character proportions, clothing details, faces, and individual compositional elements. Therefore, the images only preserve the recognizable traits of the chosen aesthetic.
