PROJECT CONCEPT

In early childhood, my grandmother introduced me to the paintings of Bosch. I was, to put it mildly, astonished by his chthonic worlds. Bosch captured the perfect atmosphere of madness, which, in my opinion, is suitable for subjects extending even beyond the scope of the artist’s own creations. In this project, I will apply the style of his paintings to visualize my favorite books, songs, and events.

Example images from the dataset

I generated images using the Stable Diffusion model. For training, 23 fragments of Hieronymus Bosch’s paintings in a 1:1 format were selected. ChatGPT helped me write the code, create image descriptions for subsequent training, and rework song lyrics into prompts.

IMAGE GENERATION

Civil Defense — At the beginning, there was a word

How they hauled the log on seven horses Through the needle eye And across three thousand swampy lands

big
Original size 1200x1200

in the style of Hieronymus Bosch, a surreal medieval allegorical procession—seven exhausted horses pulling an enormous, ancient wooden log that passes through the impossibly tiny eye of a needle. This is a strange journey across seven-by-seven worm-eaten mythical lands, enveloped in sleep-inducing poisonous fog, wandering dead forests, dry, twisted trees with hollow trunks, and decaying branches. Tiny medieval travelers cross barren landscapes, while hybrid creatures hide beneath the earth and enormous insects crawl through rotten wood. Impossible roads wind through distant ruined towers, shrouded in dreamlike mist and eerie silence, all governed by absurd fairy tale logic and rich with symbolic imagery. The composition features intricate miniature figures, dark earthy pigments, muted reds, ochre, and dusty brown tones, executed in the manner of an aged oil painting with rough, painterly textures and a dense, fantastical composition filled with intricate details—a haunting medieval surrealism.

Original size 1200x1200

in the style of Hieronymus Bosch, a surreal medieval scene—a huge log being transported by seven horses, passing through the eye of a needle across seven times seven worm-eaten lands, through soporific mists and wandering dry forests—medieval surrealism, dark earthy pigments, muted reds and ochre, aged oil painting, intricate fantastical details, dreamlike atmosphere, composition inspired by Hieronymus Bosch

The model is unable to generate exactly seven horses because Bosch is characterized by a merging crowd.

Vladimir Sorokin — The Oprichnik’s Day

My favorite example of a dissolving crowd is the scene in the bathhouse from the novella «The Oprichnik’s Day.» The Oprichniks, led by Batya, undress and enter a warm plunge pool. There, they line up like a living caterpillar, symbolizing shared sin and transformation into a unified state organism.

Original size 1456x1200

wxbosch style, a grotesque surreal scene inspired by Day of the Oprichnik by Vladimir Sorokin, inside a traditional Russian wooden bathhouse, COMPOSITION: adult oprichniks form one perfectly round, closed circle, a geometrically regular ring of human figures, viewed from a slightly elevated angle, all men standing shoulder to shoulder in hot bathwater, each man pressed closely against the men beside him, equal spacing between every figure, the circle is complete, symmetrical, and clearly visible, the center of the circle remains open, all figures have equal visual importance—no leader, no central character, no line formation, no spiral, no scattered figures, OPRICHNIKS: adult Russian men inspired by sixteenth-century oprichniki, shaved heads, stern faces, heavy brows, prominent cheekbones, thick moustaches, broad shoulders, powerful builds, intimidating expressions, their upper bodies emerging from steaming water, historically inspired Russian clothing resting on wooden benches, DOG’S HEAD: one severed dog’s head resting separately on the wet wooden floor beside the bath, clearly recognizable canine features, non-graphic depiction, no excessive blood, traditional Russian wooden bathhouse, rough timber walls, wet benches, wooden buckets, thick clouds of steam, rippling water, dim amber light, deep shadows, dark earthy pigments, muted reds and ochre, aged oil painting, grotesque symbolism, intricate details inspired by Hieronymus Bosch, clear silhouettes, distinct faces, anatomically coherent bodies, one single closed circular formation, no duplicated heads, no fused bodies, no extra limbs, no extra animals

Original size 1456x1200

wxbosch style, a grotesque surreal scene inspired by Day of the Oprichnik by Vladimir Sorokin, set inside a traditional Russian wooden bathhouse. A group of adult oprichniks stands tightly packed in the hot water, forming one continuous human chain resembling a caterpillar. Each man presses closely against the one in front of him, their bodies aligned in a single winding formation. The entire group is clearly visible, with Batya, the stern, authoritative leader, at the head of the formation, the other oprichniks following directly behind him, their faces individually distinguishable. Their shoulders and upper bodies emerge from the steaming water against the wooden bathhouse walls—wet timber, thick clouds of steam, and rippling water surrounding the tightly packed figures. The lighting is a dim amber with deep shadows, featuring grotesque, solemn expressions, dark earthy pigments, and muted reds and ochre. The style mimics an aged oil painting with intricate textures, creating a surreal medieval atmosphere inspired by Hieronymus Bosch. The composition is clear and readable, featuring one continuous chain of people—no scattered groups, no unrelated characters, no duplicated heads, no fused faces, no extra limbs, and no unrelated activities.

The plot is similar, but the oprichniki are not recognizable.

History of Russia

I decided that using Bosch’s merging crowds would be the best way to illustrate large-scale popular unrest.

Original size 1456x1200

in the style of Bosch, a surreal grotesque painting titled «March of the Communist Brigades, ” depicting a large, organized procession of communist workers marching forward along a broad medieval city street. The workers are arranged in several orderly parallel rows; each person has a distinct, recognizable silhouette. Red flags and banners are held high above the crowd, featuring hammer and sickle emblems on the fabric banners. The workers wear dark industrial uniforms and worn work clothes, sporting stern, determined expressions. Some carry tools and red flags. The setting is a strange industrial city inspired by medieval European architecture—tall brick factories, chimneys, and smoke rising into the sky—alongside oversized gears, strange machinery, and monumental buildings, all featuring surreal, hybrid architectural details. Grotesque, Bosch-like figures populate the distant background. The composition is wide and panoramic, maintaining a clear separation between the marching rows, and the procession moves in one consistent direction. Foreground workers are clearly visible, while the crowd diminishes toward the distant background. The palette utilizes dark, earthy pigments—muted reds, ochre, and brown—giving the piece the quality of an aged oil painting with intricate textures and a dreamlike atmosphere, embodying symbolic surrealism. The composition is inspired by Hieronymus Bosch, featuring distinct human figures with coherent anatomy—no fused bodies, no duplicated faces, no tangled limbs, and no chaotic overlapping silhouettes.

Original size 1456x1200

wxbosch style, surreal grotesque historical painting, the shelling of the White House of Moscow in October 1993, the Russian parliament building under artillery fire, thick clouds of smoke rising above the monumental white building, damaged facade, broken windows, dust and debris, military tanks positioned on a wide city avenue, distant silhouettes of soldiers and civilians taking cover, a tense and tragic atmosphere, chaos and political collapse, smoke drifting between monumental Soviet buildings, dark symbolic imagery, surreal figures hidden in the smoke, strange Bosch-like details in the distant background, wide cinematic composition, the White House clearly recognizable in the center, tanks visible in the foreground, the building dominates the scene, dramatic overcast sky, muted gray, ochre, and dark red palette, aged oil painting, intricate painterly textures, historical tragedy portrayed as a dark allegory, inspired by Hieronymus Bosch, high detail, coherent architecture, realistic perspective

The flags and tanks turned out well; the somber mood suits the depicted narratives perfectly. It appears that a brief description helps generate more precise scenes. In the next generations, I plan to turn individual lines of song lyrics into prompts.

Dog cut — Lift

What a wicked night! I’m stuck in the elevator The lights went out Now I’m nowhere

Original size 1200x1200

in the style of Hieronymus Bosch—a surreal medieval allegory of a man trapped inside an elevator between floors, a lonely, exhausted man in an ancient iron elevator cabin suspended above an endless abyss, flickering red light, broken floor indicators, strange hybrid creatures crawling across the elevator walls, tiny human figures trapped in miniature elevator cabins, impossible staircases, twisted steel cables hanging like fragile threads of fate, a vast dark elevator shaft resembling a medieval infernal tower, bizarre machinery, distorted clocks, floating objects, ghostly reflections, an abandoned city glimpsed through narrow doors, a mysterious golden beam of heavenly light entering the darkness, the man facing an existential revelation—isolation, absurdity, black humor, symbolic imagery of a broken life and unexpected hope, intricate miniature figures, surreal architecture, dense composition, dark earthy pigments, muted reds, ochre, tarnished metal, aged oil painting, rough painterly textures, intricate fantastical details, dreamlike atmosphere, haunting medieval symbolism, composition inspired by Hieronymus Bosch, masterpiece
