Brutalism emerged in post-war Europe between 1950 and 1953, with untreated concrete becoming the primary material. Steel was expensive and scarce, while concrete was cheap and readily available. Buildings of this movement are characterized by massive forms, a relatively rough texture, and an honest expression of structure.

The primary inspiration is the architect Le Corbusier and his residential complex, rendered with characteristic Brutalist execution. The building was constructed from rough, unfinished concrete, and this imperfection became part of the architectural intent.
